  • SpriteKit / Swift 4 + skinnable characters?

Hello, I have not yet purchased Spine but am considering it for a project I am working on.

The project is being developed for iOS using Swift 4.3 + SpriteKit. Currently I am animating the character animation in After Effects using DUIK for the IK rigging. That system works great, but forces me to use image sequences for the character. I would love a solution that would allow me to use individual puppet parts (to save a little K weight) and more importantly the ability to custom skin the main game character.

From what I have seen Spline has a 3rd party Swift runtime but its a few years old and a couple versions of Swift ago. I could probably update the runtime myself to be Swift 4.x compatible, but my bigger question is about the skinning ability. I am not using any complicated distortion, its pretty straight forward puppeting. Before I invest in the software I would love to know if it is going to work as I hope it will.

Thanks everyone.

We do not give support for 3rd party runtimes I'm afraid. Updating to Swift 4.x is likely simple enough. I had a quick look at the old 3rd party runtime, and skinning appears to work as intended.

I would suggest you pick up the old runtime, modify it to your liking, then use one of our existing sample project exports to test if it works to your liking. E.g. the Goblin skeleton has 2 skins in it: spine-runtimes/examples/goblins at 3.6

sounds good. Thanks for the response.
