More engine-specific runtime licensing questions
Hi!
You guys probably get these a lot but here's one for an engine you probably dont hear much about haha.
This is my scenario:
I currently use the RPG Maker MV ( http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/products/programs/rpg-maker-mv ) engine and have the following issue;
There are no real runtimes for it right now and I want to request a scripter to bring Spine functionality onboard in the shape of a "spine plugin". I noticed theres a pixiv runtime which he can probably use as a base or something, but my actual problem lies elsewhere. I am an asset maker and I want to release spine made monsters along the script which would enable these spine made monster files to be loaded into other projects in the first place. This is where the licensing question would kick in, would all the people using these public assets and script be able to freely use the assets I have created and released? (along the script) or would they need to own their own spine license in order to legally use them?
Thanks!
Anyone using the assets will also need their own Spine license. For instance, I've seen examples on the Unity store mention this.
I see, only if the runtimes are used right? based on the unity store writing examples.
Yeah, theoretically you could export your animations as GIF's or spritesheets instead and you could distribute without requiring a Spine license. You lose a lot of the power you get with using Spine, however.
You own the assets you create with Spine: project files, JSON and binary data, video, images, and texture atlases. You can sell those or give them away free or do whatever you want with them. If someone wants to use the Spine Runtimes, they need a Spine license. So if you have scripts or other software which contains the Spine Runtimes, others won't be able to distribute that without a Spine license. If you sell JSON/binary data, you probably want to let your buyers know they'll need a Spine license to be granted permission to use the Spine Runtimes. Of course the Spine license also lets them use Spine to edit the projects, which will be helpful.
