Selecting points are frustrating!

Working on adding a 3-dimensional aspect to my character in my project. However, while selecting points I find myself clicking other segments of the character. If I have hair separated into multiple selections, but I only want to select points for one segment of that hair, why is a challenge to select points? I am constantly selecting a different point almost entirely.

If you have multiple meshes selected and the vertices are close to each other it can sometimes be a bit tricky to get the right one.
A few tips. Use Ctrl1-9 to save selections, and 1-9 to recall them. I do this when I'm switching between selections a lot or when I'm animating and want to speed it up. When you have a single mesh selected and one vertex on that mesh you will not be able to select vertices on other meshes.

Thanks, I found that turning off selecting images entirely in the options and selecting them from the Hierarchy seems to fix this issue.

That works. Also, if you have at least one vertex selected then selecting other meshes won't be possible. Eg, you can select one vertex by clicking, then can box select (by holding ctrl/cmd) and won't accidentally select other meshes.
