There are whiperings that what we need is possible with unity+spine+mechanim, But this is third hand information.(he is 2d apparently, we are 3d)
We have two spine objects with the same Z positional value, we want to be able to give each object its own priority, of which one will render above another. Currently we can not guarantee which object will render infront.
For example, we have two rectangles, Green and Blue. Currently we are unable to control which one shows infront,
Green:

And we would like this control
