I have some throwing projectiles in my game including a throwing axe, and a batarang kinda weapon. As they were quite flat weapons, animating the spin was just a very simple mesh transform to alter the perspective.

When it came to doing the hammer, the above technique just did not look right due to it being a thicker weapon. Had to use a base mesh containing the top, bottom, left and right of the hammer which I would show and hide depending on the position of the spin. Looks very convincingly 3d, worked out well and looks great in game, enjoy!

Very cool! We have some ideas for making this sort of pseudo 3D easier in the future.

That's really neat. Would love to see a screencap of it so we can see the mesh 🙂
