  • Attaching Image to Bone

I've spent hours trying to relocate the resource I used years ago, read a bunch of tutorials and even tried asking chatGPT on how to do it. So sorry if this is something that gets asked a lot. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I imported my character with all the individual layers, created meshes for each piece. Now it says I need to make bones and then attach the images to the bones. When I try to do this, it scrambles the positioning of my image. I can't remember the technique on how to avoid this. I've tried dropping and dragging the image to the respective parent bone. I've tried clicking parent and then selecting the bone. It throws all of my pieces everywhere.

Additionally, when I try and draw the bones, it doesn't seem to work the same as it did in the past? I remember you'd draw the parent bone and then it would create the child bones after. But I can't get child bones to appear? I can't figure out how to dictate it's a child bone anymore.

Any help is appreciated!

To attach images to bones without scrambling their positions, you need to ensure that the images are correctly parented to the bones. When you drag an image to a bone or use the "Set Parent" option, make sure that the compensation is enabled. This can be done by toggling the "compensate" button, which looks like a lock icon, to prevent the images from moving when you change their parent. This feature allows you to make changes without affecting the parent-child relationship, keeping your images in place.

For creating child bones, you should first select the parent bone, then use the Create tool to draw the new bone. If you hold the Shift key while creating a new bone, it will not select the new bone, allowing you to continue creating sibling bones. If you want to create a child bone, ensure the parent bone is selected before drawing the new bone. This process should help you maintain the hierarchy and structure of your skeleton.

I'm trying to look for this 'lock' icon but don't see it anywhere. I see dots and paperclips and then arrows to hide and expand.

The only thing that resembles a lock for me, is the lock for the toolbar.

Scratch that. I think this was the lock I'm supposed to look for? However even when I have it highlighted/selected, the images still move when assigning the parent to the image. I've tried toggling these buttons in different ways but still not sure what I'm doing wrong.

I've gone and goofed up. Despite never linking an image to the bone, it now deletes the image when I try and delete/redraw the bone.

Spinebot was mentioning bone and image compensation.

Just setting the parent of a attachment should not cause the attachment to move. Can you show a video of what you are doing?

If you delete a bone, the slots (and attachments under those slots) and bones under the deleted bone are also deleted.

To be clear, under Images are your image files. If you've already created meshes from your images, you'll want to create bones next. Use the Create tool. Next you want to attach your meshes (not technically "images") to the bones. You can do that by dragging the mesh or its slot to a bone in the tree, or by using the Parent button on the mesh or its slot and then clicking a bone in the tree or viewport.

After you get that working, you can try this shortcut to create a bone and move slots to it at the same time:

Nate I think I was able to figure out where I went wrong (for now). For some reason I forgot meshes were the image and I got real confused with the tutorial I was following and tried attaching them a second time (essentially).

    Thank you for the help!
