Exported .mov files stuck on first frame

Hey there,

I've got two Spine animation files from our animator and both of them don't play when exported to .mov

I had this issue with my Windows machine first until I installed every possible codec and media player I could find online.

Now I'm using my M1 Mac, and I experience the exact same issue. Mac is a little more limited than Windows and I just can't seem to get the playback working.

What can possibly be the reason for such behavior and are there any solutions?

We've greatly improved exporting in Spine 4.1, currently in beta. Can you please try that? Be sure not to save your project until you are ready to move to 4.1. FWIW, it's quite stable, the beta will be over soon.

Just updated and instantly noticed that the export speed has increased drastically. Literally 3-5 times faster than before.
Unfortunately, the video is still not opening in QuickTime, and only playing the first frame in VLC.

I really feel like there's something wrong with the Spine files because I also have very old Spine animations from 4-5 years ago and they work well when exported.
Is there an option to send it over to support to check what's wrong?

It's possible I suppose but unlikely that 4.1-beta is producing incorrect video files, as it uses FFmpeg. Note that QuickTime is a relatively poor video player and doesn't support some encodings. VLC is better.

What MOV encoding are you using? Have you tried other encodings or formats?

Latest iterations of QuickTime can't playback MOV with PNG encoded frames anymore. You'll have to use MPEG4 in that case.

Just downloaded Elmedia player and you're right, the video is playing thru but it's flickering at times and doesn't look smooth overall.

What is the best way as of today to export a good-looking Spine animation in a video format? I mean without forcing everyone you share the video with to download extra players or codecs.

Sorry, missed that part somehow.
I'm not sure where I can check the encoding type except in the export modal which doesn't have any encoding options. Just some settings and configs.

Both MOV and AVI are only working in Elmedia on my mac since it's a player supporting MPEG4 as suggested in a previous comment by Mario.

No worries, thanks. The encoding is specified in the export settings. You are using PNG:

As Mario mentioned, QuickTime can't play PNG. For broader support in video players, try using MPEG4.

Right, that solved it!
There's another issue now though. I have just sent an email with a screen recording describing what's going on, so we'll move the discussion to email and leave this thread as resolved.
