  • cool ill get my notes together for my little project and hit you up on skype!

  • Hey about 2 years ago you gave me this tutorial on making art really cool using vector graphics (it was in photoshop). I thought it rocked. I was curious if you
    a) still hang out on these forums
    b) still do art
    c) do contract work?

  • I didn't want to open up a thread especially with this kind of a question but I cannot find anywhere a good conversation on one or the other. They similar but maybe are vastly different in key areas that matter when it comes to having such a program for making 2d sprite based games with bone animations in Unity.

I am not an animator by trade but this program has intrigued me for ever and now I am ready to get one or the other (AnimeStudio is on sale) so it is prompting me to investigate this vs that one again since I am ready to buy. I am mostly a unity developer.

  • I will be at home on Skype in about 15 min! Maybe 20

  • okay ill cut my consulting gig short so I can be home 4-4:30pm tomorrow. 🙂

  • LOL this time zone thing is more difficult than it should be.

To confirm, by my estimation 4:30pm my time should be 12:30am your time.

    used this:

Corresponding UTC (GMT) Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at 23:30:00

  • Okay EST is two hours ahead of me, so Tuesday 6pm would be 4pm my time. I could do that. (We did just change our clocks back one hour) . Not sure if the site you use to do the time conversions takes that into account 🙂 Guessing it does. Let us shoot for tuesday at 4pm. I might be a few minutes late as I have a consulting gig at 2:30 that day, but I will try to cut it off by 3:30 and be home by 3:50pm

    Thanks!

    Shane

You call the time and I'll be there. Mane sure I respond means I saw the pm 🙂

So this web site does not always show me when I have a PM. I missed this 🙁

"Alright- then how bout we stick to Thursday 1pm you time before something gets the chance to intervene =D
I must say im quite looking forward to this- as the only teaching experience I have so was teaching a group of Middle-schoolers about basic Photoshop, and Art for Games.

just add me on Skype: tobias.breitenbach
and hit me up on thursday arround 1pm ure time =D
Dont worry if its a bit sooner or later.
I should be available almost all day on Skype and am not bound by the 8pm."

I am so sorry, since you said this is 20$ an hour for your time please give me your pay pal and I will send you an hrs worth of time. I feel horrible I missed this message (it is now 8pm my time so like 3am) . Again I am very sorry, I could do 1pm saturday my time again. I will mark it down AND check the inbox too here since it doesnt always tell me when I have a message waiting 🙁

Skype is fine. Though Saturday could work before like 6pm my time so before 1am i think your time? Normally weekends open for me but we are having a halloween/birthday party this saturday 😃 We can figure this out, I am totally excited. Thursday or friday at 1pm my time (again 8 pm your time I think) works too I can make gimp work no issue.

Aren't we all always at the mercy of the girlfriends? 😃

  • Dans Art

That is exactly what I would be interested in. Spine I think I can do as a non artist guy but the workflow before so I know what id need to learn or get good at. I know I am not an artist and wouldn't claim my art could be that of an artist with training but at least it might help me to build better looking prototypes to get more people excited for projects etc. 🙂

Friday at your 8pm would be great (that would actually be 1pm my time I am on MST or MDT I guess they use). Though it is middle of workday for me I can take an hour (just move my lunch) or what not and I won't have photoshop just gimp. LOL. Ever do weekends?

  • Dans Art

That would be slick. All would be needed for the workshop would be Photoshop yes? You are in Germany correct? I believe you are about 7 hours ahead 🙂 9:30am my time is 4:30pm your time.

Let me know though when you'd plan this and I would work my schedule around. Do you do these things on Twitch or some other streaming site or just youtube or something?

  • Dans Art

You are awesome for keeping me in the know of this kind of art work. LOL I may be a total newb cause to me this stuff looks intricate. I also think its about the shading and detail and I know they usually create these in seemingly complex ways but the actual process is more often than not simple. These minimalist (almost 2d polygonal) types of styles look great I am curious what kinds of programs build these. I am thinking something like adobe illustrator?

  • I am in awe of that mockup 🙂. I have to admit I had an artist friend do the original print. I thought though with concept art in hand I could more readily build something for use in spine by as you said using shapes and the like. I think the finer points of animating would be difficult for a coder as well but I always had an appreciation for art and can draw well enough on paper that I could hopefully learn to translate it to PC. I have a wacom tablet (intuos), along with photoshop cs5, corel painter 13 I think, ArtRage and Mischief. So I always plan on "learning" but alas spend most my time coding. I am wondering what your freelance prices are.

I have to say hearing you are from Berlin made me think of and miss Germany a lot. All of the family on my mothers side is german. I miss visiting there. I bet the schools are amazing.

Thanks again for the reply, I am curious how long to make that character just now in the mockup it took you. Now THAT is a session I would like to see. I saw one tutorial for spine making a character run/walk. They used like a shadow/outline to match up the feet correctly. Does spine come with this dummy 'model'?

  • I don't know where you came from but you are really aw3esome to share this stuff. So someback ground I am a programmer by nature, and a good one 'clasically trained' but I have always liked art, doodling etc just never any classes and feel I am not very good. But you inspire especially with the talk of simple shapes. The spine software sems like it could allow a programmer to hobble his way through the art and then create some nice animations with it. My current game I am making I outsourced the art as its all pixel art:

    http://www.viciousbytes.com/superjetpack.html

But when I am finally done making this game I want to do my own art using spine like animations in that high resolution 2d way. This is why I had the question in the forum. I even have a concept art character to work from:

This is the character I want to draw and animate.

  • ty so much for this message. I missed it 🙁 and totally didn't see it until today. I am not really an artist. I just thought the spine method broke down the pieces enough where perhaps I could get good at building that kind of art of my future games.

Thanks again for this pm I really appreciate it!

  • Love the wulver tutorial. I like the asset breakdown too. Ty! I wish I was an artist. Maybe tutorials on how to make art like this 😃 lol. Ty for the information!

  • This is probably a dumb question, but while spine looks awesome to animate and I can figure that out if you have the art, are there any good tutorials on making art that easily works with spine? How-tos ? Just curious, I know it is called bone animation but when you make art in this style what is it called (so i can research on how to make art for my games not just the animations using the art). (I do fully realize spine is not an art package and utilizes things in photoshop on layers, that is what I am trying to figure out how is the workflow for making art that spine can use)
